Mint Julep

Instructions

1. Gently muddle mint leaves with simple syrup in the bottom of a rocks glass or julep cup.
2. Add bourbon.
3. Pack the glass tightly with crushed ice.
4. Stir until the outside of the glass frosts.
5. Top with more crushed ice and garnish with a generous bouquet of mint.

Notes

The Mint Julep has been the official drink of the Kentucky Derby since 1938, though it dates back to the 18th century. Traditionally served in a silver or pewter julep cup, the key is plenty of crushed ice and a generous crown of fresh mint pressed against your nose as you sip.
