Instructions
- Place the sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass.
- Add the Angostura bitters directly onto the sugar cube.
- Add a splash of water (about 1 teaspoon) and muddle until the sugar is dissolved.
- Add a large ice cube to the glass.
- Pour the bourbon or rye whiskey over the ice.
- Stir gently for about 30 seconds to chill and dilute.
- Express the orange peel over the drink by squeezing it to release the oils, then garnish with the peel.
- Optionally, add a maraschino cherry.
Notes
The Old Fashioned is one of the oldest cocktails, dating back to the early 1800s. The key to a perfect Old Fashioned is proper dilution and a good quality whiskey. Use a large ice cube to minimize dilution while still chilling the drink. Some prefer bourbon for its sweeter profile, while others prefer the spiciness of rye.
