Satan's Whiskers
Outstanding
Kevin Armstrong spent years running cocktail programmes at some of London's most celebrated bars, Milk & Honey, Trailer Happiness, the Match Bar Group. In 2013 he opened Satan's Whiskers on a scruffy stretch of Cambridge Heath Road in Bethnal Green, and the premise was disarmingly simple: a cocktail bar, nothing less, nothing more. Twelve years on, that clarity of purpose has landed it at number 21 on the World's 50 Best Bars list.
From outside, it doesn't look like much. Tagged walls, a neon sign, a door you could easily walk past. Inside is a different story, taxidermy animals peer down from the walls alongside vintage posters, tables are spaced well enough for comfortable conversation, and the bar itself invites you to pull up a stool and watch the team work. Hip-hop plays at a volume that adds energy without drowning out your companion. It's a space that knows exactly what it is.
The drinks programme is built around a 900-strong list of classics, printed fresh each day as a rotating selection. Everything is made to order, no pre-batching, no shortcuts. The Charlie Chaplin (sloe gin, apricot, lime) arrived bright and perfectly tart. The Bumble Bee, with dark rum, honey, lemon, and egg white, was velvety and well-judged. The Satan's Manhattan, Knob Creek, sweet vermouth, bitters, was as clean a stirred drink as you'll find in East London. Ask for an East 8 Hold-Up, Armstrong's house creation with vodka, Aperol, pineapple, and lime, if it's on the day's list. Classics were excellent across multiple visits, and drinks consistently appeared within five minutes.
Service is warm without being performative. The bartenders are clearly knowledgeable and passionate, they'll talk you through the day's list, steer you towards something that suits your mood, and do it all without a hint of pretension. The food menu goes beyond bar snacks: nachos, grilled cheese, lemon sole goujons, and good olives. It complements rather than competes.
A few honest notes: weekends draw queues, the space gets louder as the evening fills up, and the exterior gives zero indication you're about to walk into one of the country's best bars. Reservations are available but not essential on quieter nights. At £13 a cocktail, this is outstanding value by any London standard, let alone for a bar with these accolades. Satan's Whiskers proves that world-class drinking doesn't need ceremony. It just needs to be done right.
